The team "Immune Responses of Marine Macroorganisms in the Environment" studies the molecular and cellular bases of the immune response as a major physiological function of marine organisms of interest in aquaculture. Our studies are highly motivated by the infectious and non infectious diseases that threaten the sustainability of marine invertebrate aquaculture. In this context, we develop molecular approaches for (i) monitoring the heath status of cultured species and preventing the occurrence of diseases, and (ii) selecting animal lineages more resistant to diseases. This requires a deeper knowledge of the immunology and genomics of the species of interest. It also requires the development of integrative approaches considering the interactions with the ecosystems and the biological communities present where the species are grown. Our research mainly focuses on the effectors of the immunity, with a particular attention to antimicrobial peptides and proteins, and the interaction of the immune responses with the commensal and pathogenic microbial communities from the environment.

Background Marine bivalve mollusks and penaeid shrimps are surrounded by an environment rich in microorganisms and have consequently developed efficient systems to detect and discriminate among them between those which are beneficial to their physiology and health and those which can potentially be harmful or pathogenic. In aquaculture industry, animals are submitted to an environment which ecological parameters are constantly evolving. These persistent variations can therefore impact animal homeostasis and promote disease emergence.
Objectives Our work intent to deepen current knowledge in immunology and genomics of aquaculture animals in considering integrated relationships between ecosystems and the biological communities that forms their environment.
Research program Our research mainly focuses on innate immunity effectors with a specific emphasis on antimicrobial peptides (AMP) and interactions between the host immune response and commensal or probiotic microbial communities versus interactions with pathogen microbial communities from the environment. To this end, diverse methodologies are developed from global transcriptomic approaches, immunohistochemistry, to peptide and protein characterization and analysis of their biological properties. Our research, as well as being worthwhile regarding comparative immunology, also bears applied outcomes in: - Ecophysiology : to better understand the impact of the environment on biological communities that form the living components of ecosystems and on animal sensibility to diseases - Genetics: to identify pathogen resistance criteria useful for selective breeding programs - Disease prevention: To develop diseases’ prevention methods respectful of the environment and ecosystems |
