Objectives: Study of the ecophysiological adaptation of aquatic animals to salinity during ontogeny. Investigations focus on the adaptation to salinity through osmoregulation. Interactions with nutrition are also studied. The adaptive mechanisms and the impact of abiotic contaminants are investigated, especially in early developmental stages, within an integrative framework that associates ecophysiology and ecotoxicology.

Within a general concept of integrative biology, the AEO team aims to investigate the adaptation of aquatic organisms to environmental factors. As the successful establishment of a species in a given habitat depends on the ability of each of its developing stages to adapt to the environment, adaptation is studied during the ontogeny. The expected results will contribute to the interpretation of the adaptation of populations to habitats and its variability.
Beside its own interest, understanding ecophysiological adaptation of organisms provides useful information to consider the impact of global change on ecosystems. The most adequate aquatic ecosystems where sentry organisms can be identified are those regularly exposed to environmental changes, such as coastal, estuarine and lagoon media.
In these habitats, salinity is highly variable, with regular (tides) or random (meteorological events) variations of periodicity and range. Exposed organisms respond to these variations through ecopysiological adaptive mechanisms called osmoregulation. The occurrence of these mechanisms during ontogeny is one of the factors determining their life cycle. Investigations on the mechanisms of the ontogeny of osmoregulation are conducted at different levels of integration: organisms, organs (tegument, gills, excretory organs, digestive tract), cells (ionocytes) and molecules (ionic pumps and channels, aquaporins). Using different phyla (crustaceans, fish), these comparative studies contribute to understand the developmental strategies of their successive ecophases (dispersal, retention, or export / reimport) between habitats differing by their salinity (sea, estuary, lagoon, even freshwater) .
Deciphering the osmoregulatory adaptations of animals in relation to their ontogenetical migrations is thus the main goal of the team. Studies based on some model species (peneid shrimps, sea bass, sea bream, tilapia,..) open to applications in aquaculture. Other programs developed in the past years study the effects of natural or anthropogenic changes, such us global change or xenobiotics, metallic and organic pollutants, thus opening up to ecotoxicology.
As investigations are conducted at different levels of integration, the team is working at the crossroads of ecology, physiology, developmental biology and evolution.
This multidisciplinary approach is permitted by a variety of techniques used by and accessible to the AEO team from its own equipment and in the technical units of the UMR and of the University : embryonic and larval culture (crustaceans and fishes), nano-osmometry, ionic titrations, enzyme activity measurements, western blot, histology, microscopy (optical, confocal, epifluorescence, electronic), immunolocalization, sequencing, northern blot, Q-PCR, QRT-PCR, …
